How Is Fault Determined in a Multi-Vehicle Crash in East Hartford?
Fault in a multi-vehicle crash is determined by reviewing several types of evidence. These can include official reports, witness accounts, vehicle positions, roadway markings, and video footage. Multi-car accidents often involve chain reactions, which makes reviewing multiple sources important.
Police reports document the scene as officers observed it at the time of the crash. They record vehicle positions, visible damage, road markings, and any statements made at the scene. These reports often serve as the starting reference point for any fault review.
Witness statements add independent accounts of what happened before and during the crash. People who saw the collision from outside the vehicles can describe driver behavior, speed, and lane positioning. Their accounts may confirm or challenge what drivers reported.
Vehicle damage patterns reveal where contact occurred and the direction of force at impact. Inspectors examine each car separately to map how the crash unfolded. The location and severity of damage can indicate which vehicle struck another and at what angle.
Roadway evidence fills in details that witnesses and drivers may not capture. Skid marks show where braking began. Debris placement and gouge marks in the pavement help reconstruct the sequence of events.
Connecticut follows a comparative fault rule, meaning more than one driver can share responsibility for a crash. Each party’s percentage of fault affects what compensation may be available. A driver found partially at fault may still be eligible to seek recovery depending on the circumstances.
