Who Pays for Medical Bills After a Car Accident in Southington, CT?

In Southington, CT the person responsible for the crash is generally liable for medical expenses through their auto liability insurance. This means the at-fault driver’s insurance policy is typically the primary source of coverage for injuries sustained by others involved in the collision.

Connecticut is an at-fault state, which works differently from no-fault states like New York or New Jersey. Here, injured people can file a claim directly against the driver who caused the accident. Your own health insurance may also help cover initial medical costs while a liability claim is being processed, which can take time depending on how complex the case is.

If the at-fault driver has little or no insurance, your own uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage may come into play. Connecticut law requires insurers to offer this type of coverage, though drivers can choose to reject it in writing.

Medical payments coverage, sometimes called MedPay, is another optional add-on that can help pay for treatment regardless of who caused the crash.

It is also worth knowing that Connecticut follows a modified comparative negligence rule. This means that if you are found partially at fault for the collision, any compensation you may be eligible to receive could be reduced by your percentage of fault. If you are more than 50% at fault, you may not be able to recover damages at all.
