How Is Fault Determined in a Multi-Vehicle Crash in New Britain, CT?

In Connecticut, fault in a multi-vehicle crash is determined by the examination of evidence from the scene, statements from those involved, and the sequence of events that led to the collision. Insurance adjusters and attorneys typically work from the police report as a starting point, but that document alone rarely tells the full story.

On a high-speed corridor like I-84 through New Britain, where traffic moves fast and bunches quickly, a single rear-end impact can set off a chain reaction that makes it genuinely difficult to assign responsibility to any one driver. Connecticut follows a modified comparative negligence rule, which means a person can still recover compensation as long as they are not more than 50 percent at fault, but their recovery is reduced by their share of responsibility.

In crashes that involve five or more vehicles, fault is rarely clean. Each driver’s actions in the seconds before impact all factors into the analysis. Physical evidence such as skid marks, vehicle damage patterns, and airbag deployment data can help reconstruct the sequence.

Dashcam footage, when available, is often the most decisive piece of evidence. Witness accounts from other drivers or bystanders can also help establish who reacted and who failed to.

UM advogado de acidentes de carro can coordinate the gathering of this evidence before it disappears. A lawyer can send preservation letters to trucking or transit companies, request any onboard camera footage or vehicle data. An attorney can also work with accident reconstruction professionals to build a clear picture of how the collision unfolded and which parties bear the greatest share of responsibility.
