Tractor-Trailer Crash Kills Driver on I-291 in South Windsor, CT

Tractor-Trailer Crash Kills Driver on I-291

South Windsor, CT (June 27, 2026) – A driver died on Friday night, June 26, after a car slid beneath a tractor-trailer on Interstate 291 West near Exit 2 at Route 5 in South Windsor.

Emergency units arrived and found the car still pinned under the commercial vehicle. Crews worked through a lengthy extrication to reach the person trapped inside.

The driver died inside the car and could not be saved. No names or ages were released in the initial report on the crash.

Polícia Estadual de Connecticut called in their Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad and a truck squad to assist with the investigation. Both teams worked to document what led to the fatal wreck and collect physical evidence from the site.

I-291 West near Route 5 was closed for approximately five hours following the collision. Route 384 West, I-84 West, and Chapel Street access points to I-291 West also shut down during that period.

As of this report, authorities had not made any further details about those involved in the accident public. The investigation remains active, and more details may follow as both specialized units complete their work.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the person who lost their life.

Who Can Be Held Liable After a Fatal Tractor-Trailer Crash in South Windsor, CT?

After a fatal truck crash in South Windsor, the driver, the trucking company, or a maintenance contractor can each face liability. Fault rarely falls on one party alone. You will need driver logs, maintenance records, and vehicle data to determine who is responsible.

Tractor-trailers in Connecticut fall under federal rules set by the FMCSA. Those rules cover rest limits, cargo standards, and required maintenance. If someone violated a rule before the crash on Interstate 291, that detail can shape a family’s legal claim.

Most commercial trucks carry electronic logging devices that record speed, braking, and engine activity before a crash. That data does not stay available for long. Carriers move fast after a wreck, and records can disappear without an early preservation request.

When multiple parties share fault, your family’s claim can involve more than one defendant. A trucking company may be liable for its driver’s actions, a loader may be responsible for unsecured cargo, and a repair shop may share blame if a mechanical failure played a role. Each layer of liability has to be traced separately.

Interstate 291 is one of Hartford County’s busiest freight corridors, linking Interstate 91 and Interstate 84. Route 5 feeds into Exit 2 and draws heavy truck traffic from both directions. This stretch sees some of the highest commercial vehicle volume in the region.

If you lost someone in a truck crash, a advogado de homicídio culposo can walk you through your options. A lawyer can also identify who is responsible and what key deadlines apply. Connecticut wrongful death claims must be filed within two years of the date of death.
