What Legal Rights Do Families Have After a Fatal Hit-and-Run in Hartford, CT?
Families have the right to file a wrongful death claim in Connecticut, even if the driver was never caught. The claim belongs to the estate and runs separately from any criminal case. It does not expire just because the driver fled.
Since Connecticut’s wrongful death law covers these cases, your family can seek compensation for medical costs, funeral expenses, lost income, and lost companionship. You have two years from the date of death to file. The clock starts on the day of death, not on the day the driver is found.
If the driver is never identified, your uninsured motorist coverage may still apply. Connecticut requires drivers to carry this protection for exactly these situations.
Hartford sees heavy pedestrian traffic at all hours on streets like Albany Avenue, New Britain Avenue, and roads near I-84 and I-91. Ledyard Street connects directly to that network. Commuter traffic, trucks, and late-night drivers on those corridors put anyone on foot at real risk.
Before you file anything, you will need key documents like death certificates, police reports, and insurance records. Prompt action gives you the best chance of preserving evidence. The longer you wait, the harder it can be to pull those details together.
UM advogado de homicídio culposo can help you understand what options may apply to your case. If the driver is later found, additional claims may be possible. If the driver is never identified, your attorney can focus on available insurance coverage and help make sure no recovery option is overlooked.
