How Is Fault Determined After a Car Accident in Colchester, CT?

After a car accident in Colchester, fault is determined by examining evidence from the crash scene, police reports, witness accounts, and other available documentation. Connecticut follows a modified comparative fault system, meaning that more than one person can share responsibility for a collision. In fact, you can still recover compensation as long as you are not found to be more than 50 percent at fault for the accident.

Connecticut’s comparative fault rule directly affects how much compensation an injured person may receive. If someone is found to be 20 percent at fault for a crash, their total compensation gets reduced by that same percentage. This makes the fault determination process especially important, as even a small shift in assigned responsibility can meaningfully change the outcome of a claim.

Serious crashes often involve injuries that require extended medical care, time away from work, and other significant costs. Connecticut law allows injured people to seek compensation for medical expenses, lost income, pain and suffering, and other losses tied to the collision.

UM advogado de acidentes de carro can review police reports, medical records, and other documentation to help build a clear account of what happened. An attorney can also handle communications with insurance companies, identify all available coverage, and explain what types of compensation may apply to a specific situation.
