How Uninsured Motorist Coverage Helps After a Hit-and-Run in Hartford, CT

After a hit-and-run in Hartford, uninsured motorist coverage may help pay for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other damages. This coverage can apply when the driver who caused the crash cannot be found. In Connecticut, auto policies must include uninsured motorist coverage.

Once the other driver leaves the scene, you should report the crash to your insurance company as soon as possible. Tell them the collision was a hit-and-run. You may be able to start an uninsured motorist claim before the police identify the other driver.

When your insurer reviews the claim, it will look at the crash facts, medical records, bills, and policy limits. Your coverage may apply to medical expenses, missed income, pain and suffering, and other losses. Reviewing your policy can help you understand how much coverage you have.

If your injuries are serious, minimum uninsured motorist limits may not cover all of your losses. Higher limits can provide more protection after a crash with an unidentified driver. Checking your coverage early can help you understand what benefits may apply.

After you file the claim, your insurance adjuster may review the police report, medical records, bills, and other documents. Even though the claim is through your own policy, the adjuster may still question your losses. Keeping records of every bill, receipt, and missed workday can help support your claim.
