What Are a Victim’s Legal Options After a Hit-and-Run Crash in New London, CT?

When a driver flees after they strike a scooter rider and cause serious injuries, the victim still has legal options, even if the driver initially left the scene. In Connecticut, a person hurt in a hit-and-run may be able to file a claim under their own uninsured motorist coverage while an investigation into the at-fault driver is ongoing. If the driver is later identified, a direct personal injury claim against that driver and their insurance carrier becomes available.

New London sits at the intersection of several busy surface roads where scooter and bicycle traffic regularly mixes with faster-moving vehicles. Scooter riders on these roads have limited physical protection, which means collisions frequently produce serious outcomes, even at lower speeds.

Injuries in crashes like this one can be severe. Leg trauma that requires a tourniquet in the field often signals arterial damage, fractures, or tissue injury that may require surgery and extended rehabilitation. A person left with lasting physical limitations after a hit-and-run may be eligible to seek compensation for emergency and ongoing medical costs, lost wages, and pain and suffering.

In Connecticut, the statute of limitations for a personal injury claim is generally two years from the date of the crash. A advogado de danos pessoais can help make sure this deadline is met and that no critical steps are missed along the way. In hit-and-run cases where the driver’s identity was initially unknown, the clock may be affected by when the driver was identified, but this varies by circumstance and is best confirmed with legal counsel early on.
