Two Residents Injured in Apartment Fire on Jefferson St

Hartford, CT (March 5, 2026) – A structure fire injured two residents and displaced multiple families on Wednesday afternoon, March 4, at an apartment building in Hartford’s Frog Hollow neighborhood.

The Hartford Fire Department emergency units responded around 4:09 p.m. to a reported fire at a multi-family home located at 334 Jefferson Street. Crews arrived and quickly began working to control flames that had spread through parts of the occupied building.

Responders acted quickly to attack the fire and stop it from spreading further. Firefighters knocked down most of the flames soon after arrival, while additional crews deployed hose lines to bring the situation under control.

Authorities confirmed that everyone inside the building exited safely before conditions worsened. Emergency responders evaluated three adults for smoke inhalation following the fire. Paramedics transported two residents to a nearby hospital for further medical evaluation. A third person declined additional treatment after responders assessed them at the scene.

The fire forced several families to leave their homes. Officials reported that three families, totaling 11 residents, were displaced after the fire damaged portions of the building. The displaced group includes eight adults and three children. Support services worked with emergency responders to provide temporary assistance and shelter for those affected.

Authorities have not yet determined what caused the fire. Investigators continue to review the scene and gather information about how the incident started.

Our thoughts remain with the residents who were injured and displaced as they recover.

Why Is Immediate Medical Treatment Important After Smoke Inhalation?

Immediate medical treatment after smoke inhalation is important because it can damage the lungs and reduce oxygen in the body. Even when symptoms appear mild at first, harmful gases and particles from a fire may continue affecting the body hours later. Early medical care helps doctors evaluate breathing, monitor oxygen levels, and identify complications before they worsen.

Smoke inhalation often occurs during house fires, apartment fires, and other building fires. People exposed to smoke may experience coughing, chest tightness, headaches, dizziness, or throat irritation. In more serious cases, exposure to carbon monoxide or toxic fumes can affect the brain, lungs, and heart. Medical professionals can run tests, provide oxygen treatment, and monitor patients for delayed symptoms that sometimes appear later in the day.

Prompt medical care also creates important medical records that document the effects of smoke exposure. These records help doctors track recovery and recommend follow-up treatment when necessary. Some people may need additional care for breathing problems, lung irritation, or other respiratory concerns after a fire. Keeping copies of medical visits, hospital evaluations, and treatment plans helps people stay organized during the recovery process.

In Connecticut, people injured in incidents such as residential fires may have questions about how medical expenses and other losses are handled. State law sets time limits for filing injury-related legal claims. Under Connecticut’s statute of limitations, individuals generally have two years from the date of an injury to file a personal injury claim in civil court. This time frame may vary depending on the circumstances, so reviewing the details of a situation early can help clarify what options may exist.

Legal guidance from a personal injury lawyer can help people understand how medical documentation, insurance communication, and potential claims may work after an injury.
