Groton, CT (May 31, 2026) – Two firefighters were injured early Sunday, May 31, after flames broke out at an apartment complex on Ledgewood Drive in Groton, forcing dozens of residents to evacuate.
The blaze was reported around 3 a.m. at the Ledges Apartments, where flames spread through multiple floors and into the attic. More than 50 residents were displaced as the structure sustained heavy damage.
A witness said people were awakened by shouting and thick smoke, prompting a hurried escape from the building. The person described seeing flames spread between buildings, forcing everyone outside in the dark.
Responders worked for several hours to bring the situation under control. Officials said the building’s exterior design allowed flames to travel upward into the attic, making containment more difficult.
Two firefighters were treated for injuries related to their work at the scene. No residents were reported hurt.
Dozens of units were affected, and families remain without housing as relief organizations assist those displaced. The cause has not yet been determined, and it is unclear where the blaze began.
Investigators continue working to determine how the blaze started.
We are thinking of those affected as they work through the aftermath.
