Compensation That Victims Can Recover After a Car Accident in Groton, CT

Victims injured in a car accident in Groton may be eligible to seek several types of compensation, depending on the severity of their injuries and the facts of the crash. Connecticut is an at-fault state, meaning the driver responsible for causing the accident can be held financially liable for the losses of those they injured.

Bear in mind that the compensation available generally falls into two main categories: economic damages and non-economic damages.

Economic damages cover the measurable financial losses a person suffers as a direct result of the crash. These include medical expenses such as emergency room visits, hospital stays, surgery, physical therapy, and any ongoing treatment needs. Lost wages from missed work and reduced earning capacity for those whose injuries affect their ability to work long-term also fall into this category.

Non-economic damages cover losses that do not come with a direct price tag but still significantly affect a person’s life. Pain and suffering, emotional distress, loss of enjoyment of activities, and reduced quality of life are all examples of non-economic damages. These losses can be harder to quantify, but they are a recognized and important part of what Connecticut law allows injury victims to pursue.

Connecticut follows a modified comparative fault rule, which means that if a victim is found partially responsible for the crash, their compensation may be reduced by their percentage of fault. As long as a person is not more than 50 percent at fault, they may still recover damages.

A car accident attorney can review the facts of a crash and explain how fault might affect and apply to your specific case.
