Groton, CT (October 13, 2025) – A devastating apartment fire in Groton claimed one life and left several others injured on Saturday evening, October 11, forcing dozens of residents to evacuate and seek emergency shelter.
According to officials, firefighters received a 911 call around 5 p.m. after flames broke out in a multi-story apartment building on Broad Street Extension. When crews arrived, they found residents trapped on balconies as thick smoke poured from the upper floors.
Witnesses said the scene quickly turned chaotic as people yelled for help and tried to escape the growing fire. Groton Fire Chief Robert Tompkins stated that the fire appeared to have started in a third- or fourth-floor apartment. Crews had to cut a hole in the roof to ventilate the building and allow firefighters to enter safely.
Firefighters used ladders to rescue trapped residents and several pets from upper floors. Emergency responders transported four people to local hospitals for treatment. Authorities later confirmed that one of the victims died from their injuries.
The Red Cross is providing temporary housing assistance to residents displaced from the seventy-five affected apartments. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the City of Groton Detective Division, the Fire Marshal’s Office, and the Connecticut State Police Fire & Explosion Investigative Unit.
