Waterford, CT (August 27, 2025) — Firefighters had to remove the roof of a partially overturned SUV Monday morning to free two people trapped after the vehicle went down an embankment, authorities reported. Emergency crews responded around 8:15 a.m. to the parking lot of the Smilow Cancer Hospital on Waterford Parkway South following the single-vehicle accident.
Officials said the SUV ended up on its side after descending a small embankment, causing the airbags to deploy. The rescue required firefighters to lift the vehicle’s roof to reach the occupants, who remained alert and responsive throughout the operation.
One of the two people involved sustained injuries and was taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London for treatment. The crash is still under investigation.
