There are three main types of mesothelioma:

  1. Epithelioid type.  Approximately 70% of people diagnosed with mesothelioma have this type.  Epithelioid mesothelioma sometimes grows slower, allowing chemotherapy and other treatment methods to have better results.
  2. Sarcomatoid type. Around 7% to 15% of people diagnosed with mesothelioma have this type.  Sarcomatoid mesothelioma seems more resistant to treatment compared to other types of mesothelioma.  As a consequence, standard chemotherapy often doesn’t well.
  3. Mixed, or biphasic, type.  10% to 20% of people diagnosed with mesothelioma have the mixed type.  This form of mesothelioma means the cancer contains both epithelioid and sarcomatoid types.  As a result, this cancer is also very resistant to current treatments available.  Nevertheless, treatment for biphasic mesothelioma is still more promising than for the sarcomatoid type.

what is asbestos?

Asbestos is the name given to a group of naturally occurring fibrous minerals that are resistant to heat and corrosion.   These fibers are found in soil and rocks in many parts of the world. They contain mostly silicon and oxygen, but also have other elements. 

There are 2 main types of asbestos:

  • Chrysotile asbestos, also known as white asbestos, is the most common type often used in industrial applications.  When viewed under the microscope, chrysotile asbestos fibers wrap around themselves in a spiral.  This unique property is why it is also called serpentine or curly asbestos.
  • Amphibole asbestos fibers are straight and needle-like.  There are several types of amphibole fibers, including amosite, crocidolite, tremolite, actinolite, and anthophyllite.

Because of their properties, asbestos was widely used in commercial products such as insulation, automotive brakes, and wallboard materials.  Asbestos has been linked to several dangerous conditions, including many cancers, which makes exposure to asbestos a potentially life-threatening situation.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), disturbed asbestos fibers are small and go airborne when disturbed. These particles are so small, victims may not realize they’re breathing them in, but over time, they can lead to dangerous health conditions.

how are people exposed to asbestos?

inhaling asbestos:

Inhaled asbestos fibers sometimes remain in the lungs for decades.  As a result, accumulating asbestos fibers cause tissue inflammation and scarring.  The scarring begins to affect breathing, leading to very serious health problems.

Until the 1970’s, there were tons of products made with asbestos. Hence, adhesives, paints, even breathing filters, were made with asbestos.

Additionally, many unsuspecting victims suffer injury from “second hand asbestos exposure”.  Surprisingly, exposure from doing laundry with clothing contaminated by asbestos can get you deathly sick.

Swallowing Asbestos:

Unsuspecting victims sometimes swallow asbestos fibers. This can happen when people consume contaminated food or liquids (such as water that flows through asbestos cement pipes).  It can also occur when people cough up asbestos they’ve inhaled, and then swallow their saliva.
